Here’s some stats on the most popular web browsers and screen resolutions.

Browser Compliance

To check browser compliance, a website should be checked with at least:

  • Firefox
  • Opera
  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • IE8
  • IE7
  • IE6 – The notorious non-standards compliant browser, but still used by about 16% of users.

Also, the pages should be checked for “printer compliance” by making sure the pages look “correct” when printed.

Quick summary (as of 10/15/10):

The most popular screen resolution (for the last two years) is 1024×768. The old 800×600 standard has pretty much faded away. Higher resolutions such as 1440×900 are increasing in popularity.

So for fixed width designs what width should the design use?

If designing for a screen resolution of 1024×768, The width should be around 960-970 pixels (to leave room for browser chrome and scrollbars, which usually take about 40-50pixels) Some folks like 960 because it is divisible by so many numbers. (See Optimal Width)
