Youtube vs Vimeo

One of the questions when dealing with Online Promotional Videos is where to host the video. You can host on a video hosting website such as Youtube or Dailymotion, or you can host on your own website. An issue is which hosting option offers the best video quality. In this post we look at the quality of two hosting services: Youtube and Vimeo.

Here are a few articles and opinions on the best video hosting sites:

The first comparison is a video by Peabody award winning videographer Andy Elliott. A Travel Documentary video for Semester at Sea, filmed by Andy in Fall 2006, shot in 4×3 standard definition.

Vimeo is first, then Youtube…

The Youtube version…

It seems like the Youtube version might be slightly “sharper” than the Vimeo version.

The second comparison is an online instructional video by Andy for Laurelhurst Chiropractic, shot in 16×9 standard definition.

Again, Vimeo is first, then Youtube…

The Youtube version…

For the second case, the Vimeo version might be just slightly better than the Youtube version.

There are a number of articles that will tell you that Vimeo is better than Youtube for standard definition videos, but from looking at the two examples above I would say it’s hard to make that claim.
