Wordpress for Websites

wplogo“Wordpress is for blogs, right?”

Well yes. But it’s also true that Wordpress can make a pretty good Content Management System for web pages….

Wordpress uses a “Template Driven” open-architecture that gives it quite a bit of flexibility. A good designer, with a knowledge of PHP, can get Wordpress to do just about anything they want.

Also, Wordpress is pretty popular and has quite a bit of support. There are a number of plug-ins and widgets available to extend the capabilities of Wordpress without needing to know any software at all.

Out of the box, I’ve found that Wordpress does a reasonable job of content management of “web pages”, although it’s emphasis is still on the management of “blog posts.” For my website, I added a number of php “tweaks” for search engine optimization, menus and so forth.

So far, the only thing that seems limiting is the ability to modify the permalink. As best I can figure the options for web page permalinks are more limited than for blog posts.

Also, it’s not clear how Wordpress will do with very large websites, when compared to other content management systems.

Here are a few examples of some websites (with or without blogs) running under Wordpress…
